Social Engagement

Social engagement is the extension of our practice beyond ourselves and into the larger community. There are many ways to get involved. Below is a list of ongoing projects led by members of SIMS along with contact information. Information is also posted on the social engagement bulletin board at the Tuesday-night sits. (To view a PDF of the SIMS social engagement guidelines, click here.)

In addition to our social engagement projects, SIMS has many integral volunteer roles that support activities within our sangha. If you're interested in participating in this way, please check our Volunteer Opportunities page or look for the sign-up sheets at the back table on Tuesday nights. Any questions regarding SIMS volunteering options can be emailed to our volunteer coordinator.

  • Noel House / Evening

    Description:

Every night of the year, thirty women from the Noel House Shelter sleep in Bloedel Hall, the same space that SIMS uses for meditation on Tuesdays. Our purpose is to assist the Noel House staff and to provide hospitality to the women who sleep in Bloedel Hall every night. We provide healthy snacks on Tuesday nights to supplement the soup that St. Mark’s provides to the women; we work side by side with St. Mark’s volunteers on Tuesday nights serving the women a hot snack when they arrive in the evenings, and also help fill in holes in their volunteer schedule. There is also an ongoing need for donations of blankets, toiletries, etc. If you are interested in helping out in either of these areas, please contact Jane Cunningham at the email address below.

  • Namaste Children's Fund (NCF)

    Description:

Founded by longtime SIMS members Cora Edmonds and Phil Crean, NCF is a Seattle-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supporting community-based education for predominantly girls in remote and underserved regions of Nepal. A major focus is education for girls from the Thehe village located in the Humla region in far western Nepal. NCF has partnered with the people from Thehe to build a hostel and English medium school in Simikot that will eventually support over two hundred students. NCF is developing a sponsorship network to sustain the school over time and build the connection between our communities.

Other NCF programs include funding two teachers who work with over fifty young nuns at the Gargen Chyoling Nunnery and the sponsorship of sixty children to attend school at the Hindu Vidyapeeth School near Dang. NCF is also involved with village development projects including building biogas toilets in Thehe and support with village development of solar energy and water supply infrastructure.

In March and April of 2011, the SIMS community participated in a "Change for Change" program where SIMS families and individuals were encouraged to mindfully collect their daily change for girls living at the Simikot hostel. The funds raised were used to purchase school art supplies and help develop the school arts department. NCF is hoping to connect the girls from Simikot with the children in the SIMS community through the exchange of art and other creative media.
